About The Sullivan County Child Care Council, Inc.
Concerns for child care arose in the early 1980’s as Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Human Ecology Department provided a number of workshops regarding child care issues in Sullivan County. As a result of these workshops, interested community members began to meet on a regular basis to discuss local child care concerns.
The main concern focused on the limited child care availability in Sullivan County. At the time, there were two center based programs (one of which was Head Start), one nursery school, one family child care program and many unregulated home providers.
In hopes of initiating a more adequate child care workforce, Head Start and Cornell Cooperative Extension obtained a grant to train family child care providers. As child care grew, parents were in need of appropriate child care referrals.
In the late 1980’s, the need for child care became more prevalent. The Sullivan County Child Care Council, Inc. was formed to provide child care resources and referrals to meet the growing demands of child care in Sullivan County. The Council hired its first Executive Director in 1990.
In 1992 the Council was awarded its first contract through New York State Office of Children and Family Services (NYSOCFS) to provide child care resource and referral services to the children and families of Sullivan County.
The Council has been providing child care resources and education to parents and child care providers for the past thirty plus years. Additionally, the Council continues to facilitate the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), legally exempt enrollment services, phone and in program technical assistance to all modalities of child care, Child Care Assistance Program application assistance and program compliance inspections.
The Council receives funding from the Child Care Development Block Grant (CCDBG) and the USDA. These funds are received via New York State Office of Children and Family Services/Division of Child Care Services, Sullivan County Department of Health and Family Services and the New York State Department of Health.
